 Orkney Sustainable Energy is based in Stromness in the Orkney Islands, which is at the heart of the renewable energy industry in Europe.  Although it has a population of only 2000 people, Stromness hosts no less than 6 environmental, renewable energy, and power companies including the world famous European Marine Energy Centre, and two academic institutes.
Orkney Sustainable Energy has an established reputation as a progressive and innovative project design company, encompassing the services necessary to complete small to medium scale renewable energy developments.  Our clients are mainly farmers, landowners, development trusts and community groups looking to develop their own renewable energy projects with a strong emphasis on local ownership, providing significant local and community economic benefits.

Richard Gauld has had major roles in a range of important renewable energy projects over the last three decades, including the first UK built wind turbine, the first UK windfarm and the first offshore wind project.  Richard is a Member of the Institute of Measurement and Control,  is a professional design engineer, is registered with the UK Engineering Council and has been awarded a special commendation for technological achievement.

Richard worked closely on a range of projects with the internationally respected consultancy firm Garrad Hassan and Partners, and through continuing professional development has studied and is qualified in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Oceanography, Earth Sciences, Renewable Energy, Sustainable Design, Innovation, Environmental Impact and Resources.  Richard is an Honours Science Graduate, specialising in Engineering, Design, Environmental Studies, Innovation and Earth Sciences.
